The University of the Philippines Visayas, through the Gender and Development Program (GDP), together with the Ugsad Regional Gender Resource Network, organized a public forum on “Mental Health of Children and Young Adolescents” on 18 October 2023 at the UPV Little Theater, Iloilo City campus. The event sought to raise awareness on the importance of mental health among children and adolescents, and to provide tips for parents, guardians, and caregivers on ways to cultivate an environment that supports children’s mental health and well-being.

The University of the Philippines Visayas (UPV) College of Management (CM) team is the regional champion of the 23rd Inter-Collegiate Finance Competition (ICFC), besting seven other schools during the Western Visayas leg of the prestigious finance quiz bee.

The UP Visayas Appraisal and Disposal Committee (ADC) turned over various office and academic equipment to four elementary schools in Miagao last October 26, 2023. 

Iloilo City is the Philippines’ first UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy as announced via a press release last October 31, 2023. The recognition is granted to applicant cities for their culinary history, tradition, culture, and identity – which integrates education, science and technology, crafts and farming industries, and environmental endeavors that contributed to the sustainable gastronomic heritage. Several members of the UP Visayas community, from faculty members, research and extension personnel, and alumni shared their expertise with Iloilo City to make the recognition possible.

The Office of the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs (OVCAA) and the University of the Philippines Visayas (UPV) Quality Assurance Committee held a three-day in-house training on Asean University Network-Quality Assurance (AUN-QA) Program Assessment (Tier 1) from 25-27 October 2023 at Hotel del Rio, Molo, Iloilo City.

The editorial staff of the different University of the Philippines (UP) Visayas student publications engaged with various sectors during a press conference dubbed “Bugtaw,” held in observance of the Indigenous Peoples (IP) and Peasant Month this October.

Dr. Jonny B. Pornel, a senior faculty member of UP High School in Iloilo teaching Mathematics, won second prize in the Short Story for Children category in the 2023 Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards for Literature Contest. The prestigious award is Pornel’s first.

Team Fifth of Ace of the University of the Philippines High School in Iloilo (UPHSI) attended the DOST-PCIEERD 6th Young Innovators Program Forum and Memorandum of Agreement Signing at the Philippine International Convention Center, PICC Forum Tent, Pasay City on October 27, 2023.

Jonathan Jurilla’s “Love Child” clinched the 1st prize in Dulang Pampelikula Category at the 71st Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards for Literature. He will receive the award in a formal ceremony to be held at the Philippine International Convention Center on November 27, 2023.
