The University of the Philippines Visayas (UPV) College of Management (CM) team is the regional champion of the 23rd Inter-Collegiate Finance Competition (ICFC), besting seven other schools during the Western Visayas leg of the prestigious finance quiz bee.
Team UPV is composed of Leigh Anne Camince, Vince Dela Peña, Cathlyn Ann Ganancial, Jessa Mae Javillo, and Lance Nicoudemus Tionko. All of them are 5th-year BS in Accountancy students at the College of Management, UPV, Iloilo City campus. Mr. Lourence Delfin Jr., CPA, a faculty member of the Department of Accounting, is the coach.
The nationwide eliminations were held simultaneously in seven venues throughout the Philippines on October 27, 2023. The Western Visayas elimination was held at the University of Negros Occidental – Recoletos in Bacolod City and was participated in by eight schools in the region.
Team CM placed 4th in the nationwide ranking with a total of 87 participating schools and is set to compete against 22 other schools in the ICFC National Finals on November 24, 2023 at the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas in Manila.
Now in its 23rd year, the annual ICFC is acclaimed by many business schools and industry practitioners as the country’s toughest and most prestigious collegiate-level finance quiz bowl, covering questions in corporate finance, investments, portfolio management, financial accounting and reporting, financial statement analysis, economics, quantitative methods in management, and business ethics.
The ICFC is a project of the Financial Executives Institute of the Philippines (FINEX) – FINEX Research and Development Foundation Inc. through its Junior FINEX Committee (JFINEX) in partnership with JPMorgan Chase & Co., a leading global financial services firm and one of the largest banking institutions in the United States.
The main objective of the ICFC is to expose business students to world-class finance education standards. The questions asked in the competition were patterned after the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) Level 1 examination.
Thirteen years ago, the team from UPV CM won the national championship of the 12th ICFC, and the College of Management still holds the record as the only school outside Metro Manila to win the national finals. (With sources from FINEX and Mr. Lourence Delfin)
