A regional conference with the theme “The Philippine Economy in the Midst of Economic Integration and Climate Change” was held on September 22, 2017 at UP Visayas, Iloilo City.
Keynote presentation on “Carbon Footprint, Inclusive Growth and the Fuel Mix Debate in the Philippines,” was given by Dr. Majah Leah V. Ravago of the University of the Philippines (UP) School of Economics.
Coinciding with the conference was the induction of the new members in Western Visayas of the Philippine Economic Society (PES) that organized the event. This activity was done in cooperation with the University of the Philippines Visayas and the National Economic Development Authority (NEDA) Region VI.
In commemoration of the 45th anniversary of the declaration of martial law during the Marcos regime, “Kaluwasan: Creative Expression and Social Criticism at a Time of Terror” was held in the afternoon of September 29, 2017 at the Multipurpose Building of UPVTC, Tacloban City. The activity was jointly sponsored of the Divisions of Humanities (DH) and Social Sciences (DSS) of UP Visayas Tacloban College (UPVTC).
Kaluwasan, a Waray word for freedom, was a three-in-one event that aimed to provide a venue for narratives from lesser-known martial law survivors, and allow freedom of expression in the processing of current social issues in the country. It also intended to enrich the critical discourse of narratives of survival from past and present terror as well as encourage partnership among UPVTC Divisions, students, and the larger community.
Having a brand new LCD projector may not be a big deal these days but for the folks of Brgy. Malagyan, Miagao, Iloilo, it still is.
This was evident in the words of thanks by Brgy. Captain Rose Mary F. Galvan during a simple turnover ceremony held in the morning of September 30, 2017 at the barangay hall.
Nestor P. Burgos Jr., Chief of Correspondents - Visayas Bureau of the Philippine Daily Inquirer was the resource person of the seminar-workshop on news and feature writing organized by the UPV Information and Publications Office (IPO).
Held in the afternoon of September 29, 2017 at the UPV Iloilo City campus, the S/W was participated in by faculty members, REPS, staff and students. It was held to encourage members from the various sectors of the UPV community to contribute news about their college, office or unit to the UPViews (UPV’s official publication), the UPV website and UPV’s social network sites.
“We have to let our external public know what is going on in UPV, particularly the achievements and accomplishments of our students, faculty members, REPS and staff,” says Ms. Anna Razel Ramirez, current Director of the IPO. She is hopeful the S/W will bring in news and feature contributions from the participants.
The S/W featured a lecture, Q & A, hands-on writing and critiquing of the participants’ outputs.
