The University of the Philippines Visayas College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences (UPV CFOS) Institute of Marine Fisheries and Oceanology (IMFO), through its IMFO- Quick Response Team (IMFO-QRT), recently conducted a life-saving skills training for its students and staff. Held on April 30, 2025, at the UPV Miagao campus, the event aimed to equip participants with essential first aid, Basic Life Support (BLS), and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) skills, enhancing their preparedness for emergencies. The successful program was a collaborative effort between IMFO, the UPV Health Services Unit (HSU), and the Miagao Nurses Association (MIANA).
The training featured presentations and hands-on activities led by several experts. IMFO Director Dr. Cristy S. Acabado delivered opening remarks. Ms. Elvira R. Nico, R.N. (HSU) and Ms. Jesi Marie T. Alacre, R.N. (IMFO admin staff) provided a comprehensive introduction to basic first aid principles and vital signs assessment which culminated in a field incident simulation activity at the UPV Beach Area. Finally, University Research Associate Ms. Precious Nikola Gaurana delivered a lecture on "Dangerous Marine Animals and Safety Measures."
This capacity building activity is seen as a crucial step in ensuring safety and preparedness among UPV constituents. The hands-on activities were particularly helpful and made the learning experience more impactful. The event concluded with a closing ceremony and the awarding of certificates.
This training is a testament to the commitment of IMFO, UPV HSU, and MIANA to promote safety and well-being within the university and the surrounding community. The newly acquired skills will not only benefit the participants in their daily lives but also significantly enhance their readiness for fieldwork activities, ensuring safer and more efficient research and operations in the often challenging marine environment. The practical experience gained through simulations and lectures directly translates to improved response capabilities in real-world scenarios, fostering a culture of preparedness and safety within the UPV CFOS community.
