Maybay emerges as top student of Class 2024

Hyke J. Maybay, a BS in Applied Mathematics student of the Division of Physical Sciences and Mathematics, College of Arts and Sciences, emerges as the top student of Class 2024 with a General Weighted Average (GWA) of 1.07978, awarding him the honor of finishing as summa cum laude.

Known as a timid student who considered connecting with people a challenge, Hyke braved the very diverse environment of UP Visayas (UPV) to build new relationships with his peers. Understanding the value of building networks, Hyke stepped out of his comfort zone and made the most of his stay in UPV.

“It was a worthwhile experience to know and get along with my peers, seniors, teachers, staff, and other members of the community who came from various backgrounds and had a wide range of interests. I believe this experience will be of significant help to me as a young professional in my chosen career,” he shared.

As a student, Hyke was diligent and focused on his academic workload. He realized early on that working together with his peers in doing reviews and group studies was essential to his academic journey. More than finding peers to study with, however, Hyke found lifelong friends in UPV, the same group of people who helped him stay afloat during the hardest times he faced in the University.

Apart from his peers, Hyke is also grateful to the guidance of his professors saying, “I could not pass any of my courses without asking for help from my instructors, asking for clarifications and suggestions whenever needed.”

Despite the demands of academic life in UPV, Hyke managed to create a healthy balance between his studies and personal time. When he was not in class, he would either be taking leisurely walks inside the campus, playing video games, or taking much needed naps. He was also an active member of UPV Elektrons and UPV Mathematics Circle, where he served as a member of the executive committee of the

latter for three years. By being part of these groups, Hyke developed a deeper appreciation of teamwork and camaraderie.

Like most fresh graduates, Hyke is eager to start his professional journey, but his personal development remains one of his priorities in the future. “I plan to be employed in the industry and gain first-hand experience as soon as I graduate. I am also thinking of pursuing a Master’s degree in Applied Mathematics in the near future to equip myself further with the necessary skills and knowledge with the aim of providing data-driven and mathematics-based solutions to the problems imposed on our society,” he added.
