Dr. Ricardo P. Babaran is the new Chancellor-elect of UP Visayas based on the UP Board of Regents’ decision today, October 18, 2017.
Babaran is a faculty member of the UPV College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences where he also earned his BS Fisheries degree. He graduated with an MS Engineering from the University of Washington and earned his Ph.D. in Fisheries Science at Kagoshima University. He is currently the Vice-Chancellor for Research and Extension.
The Junior Philippine Institute of Accountants (JPIA) of the UPV College of Management won most of the academic and non-academic competitions and was declared as the Over-All Champion of the 13th Regional Mid-Year Convention (RMYC).
Held from October 5 to 7, 2017 at various locations in Bacolod City, the event was the annual gathering of accountancy students organized by the National Federation of Junior Philippine Institute of Accountants (NF-JPIA) Regional Chapter in partnership with some of the biggest public accounting firms in the country. It was participated in by over 400 delegates from nine colleges and universities.
The Governing Council meeting of the Post Graduate Programme on Tropical Fisheries with International Linkage (ILP) will be conducted on October 16-17 at Hotel Del Rio, Iloilo City.
UP Visayas (UPV), through the College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences (CFOS), will be hosting this year’s meeting.
The meeting will include the annual review of the post graduate program in tropical fisheries. Matters related to the implementation of fisheries programs that will internationalized will also be discussed.
The Governing Council is composed of various deans and coordinators from member schools in the Asian region. This schools are the following: Sam Ratulangi University (Indonesia), Kagoshima University (Japan), University Malaysia Terengganu (Malaysia), UP Visayas (Philippines), Kasetsart University (Thailand), and Nha Trang University (Vietnam). Carrying rainbow flags, banners and donning colorful costumes, hundreds of activists and supporters gathered on October 7, 2017 at the UP Visayas main entrance and marched to the Iloilo Provincial Capitol. The event marked the second Iloilo Pride March of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex and Queer (LGBTIQ) Community. The theme this year was “Sa Iloilo, Gugma Madaug” (In Iloilo, Love Wins).
Anti-Discrimination Ordinance champion, Councilor Inday Lee Zulueta welcomed the groups at the capitol grounds at 4:00 PM, that as well commenced the program proper. National Youth Commission Asec. Commissioner Rhea Penaflor and Iloilo City Councilor Jay Treñas were among the key participants of the event. A Zumba dance joined by those in attendance capped the event.
