Literary writer Beverly W. Siy conducted a lecture titled “Creative Writes: Protektahan Mo Naman Ang Ari Mo” that tackled copyright and Philippine literature at the UPV Cinemateque, Iloilo City campus on 7 November 7, 2023.
The forum, which was attended by local writers and literature teachers, discussed copyright issues, intellectual properties, and moral and economical rights in terms of published work.
She emphasized the protection of literary, scholarly, and artistic works. She also assured that derivatives of the original work or those works emanating from the original materials with approval from the author are protected by copyright. She also said that creators of the commissioned work own the copyright of the publication. Her extensive lecture on copyright also discussed the rights of performers, producers, and broadcasters, among others.
Siy is a product of the UP Diliman College of Arts and Letters for her undergraduate degree and is currently pursuing her Master of Arts in Filipino major in Literature in the same college.
She is also a Book Champion and Intellectual Property Ambassador for 2015 of the National Book Development Board (NBDP) and the Intellectual Property Code of the Philippines (ICOPHIL). She was a finalist of the 34th National Book Awards-Anthology Filipino for her work “It’s Raining Mens.”
The event was organized by the Literature Group of the Division of Humanities led by Prof. Oveta Villareal and Ms. Dulce Deriada.
