The UPV Seaweed Laboratory, in partnership with the Provincial Agriculture Office of Iloilo (PAO), conducted training on the establishment and management of seaweed nurseries for the seaweed farmers in Northern Iloilo last November 20-21, 2024 at the New Beach Head Resort, Barosbos, Carles, Iloilo.
Attended by over 35 participants, the two-day activity included lectures and practical training sessions designed to introduce participants to recent innovations in seaweed farming. The program also allowed them to experience the fabrication of culture trays currently used in the sea-based nursery trial.
Dr. Iris Ann G. Borlongan, the team leader of the UPV Seaweed Laboratory, served as the resource person and discussed Eucheumatoid farming in the Philippines.
“Ang event nga ini ka importante gid sa aton para maka-adopt in terms of climate resilience, so makita nakon nga ini nga kahigayunan mangin paborable sa aton para sa sustainability sang industriya sang seaweeds,” said one of the participants.
This training was identified as a crucial area for capacity development during the Provincial Agriculture and Fisheries Extension System (PAFES) consultation.
The laboratory staff and some members of the PAO facilitated the training.
