The Institute of Fish Processing Technology (IFPT), College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences (CFOS), UP Visayas (UPV) organized a lecture on socio-emotional learning (SEL) in the workplace on November 21, 2024 at the Audio Visual Hall, CFOS, UPV Miagao campus.
Jhio Jan A. Navarro, faculty member of the Psychology Cluster, Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, UPV, served as the resource speaker.
The activity, which was attended by IFPT non-teaching staff and other CFOS units, aimed to provide participants with an opportunity to learn how to manage the social and emotional aspects of their lives, as well as insights into creating a safer and more supportive work environment, ultimately leading to increased productivity and job satisfaction.
Navarro underscored the importance of socio-emotional learning, a process of acquiring knowledge and skills in understanding and managing one’s emotions and interactions with others, particularly in a collaborative work environment.
He said that SELpromotes emotional well-being to understand and regulate emotions effectively, enhances empathy and understanding among colleagues, and equips employees to manage stress and burn-out.
He also introduced the five SEL competencies and how to use these skills to proactively deal with stress in the workplace, foster positive relationships with colleagues, and build a healthy and productive working environment. These competencies include self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsive decision-making.
Moreover, Navarro presented some strategies to manage stress at work. He likewise clarified issues and concerns raised by the participants related to the topic after the presentation.
