The UPV College of Arts and Sciences Division of Professional Education conducted a lecture forum on "Citizenship and Civic Education in the Philippines: Links and Possibilities,” held at the Little Theater, UP Visayas, Iloilo City, on 22 August 2023.
Three speakers delivered a lecture during the activity. Dr. Paul Dumol of the University of Asia and the Pacific discussed “The Place of Philippine History in Civic Education." He emphasized that civic duties should be a priority from the every day realities we face. As he addressed the teachers, he reminded them that "Children should be self-reliant. Teachers should guide them. Teachers are not charitable institutions, but they should guide the students to resolve their situations.”
Former UP Diliman Chancellor, Dr. Fidel Nemenzo talked about Science and Citizenship. In his lecture, Nemenzo mentioned that there is a gap between what is science and how the public sees it. Science should be accessible and comprehensible to all. The lack of understanding and appreciation for science on the part of the public has grave implications for our student education and our school system. Our teachers and educators have the responsibility to teach the right attitude towards science among students and the public, including our policymakers.
Chancellor Clement Camposano lectured on the "Pedagogical Issues in Civic Education" and emphasized the importance of civic education for students to learn how government works, their responsibilities as citizens and the importance of public participation, and the capacity to engage as an informed and responsible individual.
The event was Organized by the Division of Professional Education, headed by Prof. Pepito Fernandez, Jr., was attended by teachers and educators from the various schools of Iloilo.
