Lights. Camera. Action.
Faculty members of the University of the Philippines Visayas bravely entered the four corners of the screen as they uncover the process of video production during the Workshop for Designing and Developing TeLeMETRICS, a shorthand for “Teaching and Learning Materials for Education, Tutorial, Research, Instruction, and Classroom Support,” organized by the Teaching and Learning Resource Center in collaboration with the Division of Humanities on July 24-28, 2023.
The 5-day workshop aimed to upskill faculty members in developing multimedia materials for instruction, particularly educational video materials that can be used not only as supplemental aid for classroom lectures, but also as extension materials that would carry lessons for the general public.
Faculty members across different colleges, departments, and divisions were immersed in lectures on the basics of production, scriptwriting, and audio-visual performance followed by workshops facilitated by experts from the faculty pool of the Division of Humanities.
Prof. Katherine Valencia, former reporter of GMA Regional Network and now Assistant Professor of the Division of Humanities, introduced the participants to the production process and discussed how faculty members can transform class content into production scripts. She also made the faculty-participants undergo a “screen-test” to ease their way in front of the camera.
Former ABS-CBN TV writer, now also a faculty member of the Division of Humanities Mr. Jose Ruel Garcia, taught the basics of scriptwriting to the participants and facilitated the workshop on writing scripts, specifically with educational content.
Ms. Gerthrode Charlotte Tan-Mabilog of the UP High School in Iloilo, Division of Professional Education, completed the topic outline of the workshop with a talk on audio-visual performance. Tan-Mabilog was a former producer, program manager, and news anchor of GMA’s regional newscast, Ratsada. She also provided industry-based tips on speaking in front of the camera that enlightened the faculty members on how to deliver their written scripts.
The 5-day workshop ended with the presentation of faculty members of their performed educational scripts that can be used to support classroom discussion especially in the conduct of blended learning.
The Teaching and Learning Resource Center and the Division of Humanities plan to collaborate further and conduct more workshops on the creation of TeLeMETRICS not only to foster creativity in instruction, but also to strengthen the skills of faculty members in creating multimedia content. In addition, several programs aimed specifically on development of instructional materials are at work at the TLRC.
