The University of the Philippines Visayas-School of Technology (UPV-SOTECH) Chemical Engineering Quiz Bee Team successfully grabbed the third (3rd) place at the APCChE National Chemical Engineering Quiz Bowl held at the SMX Convention Center, Pasay City, Manila on September 4, 2023. After a rough start during the first round, the team gained momentum and made a comeback by scoring successive points and overtaking 11 other competing universities.
The quiz bee featured different chemical engineering core subjects such as ChE Calculations, Transport Phenomena (Heat Transfer, Mass Transfer, and Momentum Transfer/Fluid Mechanics), Separation Processes, Chemical Engineering Thermodynamics, Chemical Reaction Engineering, Plant and Equipment Design, Instrumentation and Process Control, Biochemical Engineering, Chemical, Process Industries, and Chemical Engineering Trivia. Allied courses such as Organic Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, Environmental Engineering, Biotechnology, Engineering Economy, and Materials Science and Engineering, were also covered during the contest.
The competition was held with 14 participating universities across the nation including De La Salle University (DLSU) placing 1st, and University of the Philippines Diliman (UPD) which got the 2nd place.
The UPV-SOTECH team was composed of three fourth-year chemical engineering students: Aaron Paul D. Infante (Captain), Ram Nikko U. Delegero, and Angelo P. Bala-od, and one (1) third year chemical engineering student: John Timothy B. Barrera. The team was coached by Engr. John Salvador Y. Ricacho, Engr. John Loui T. Tadia, and Engr. Jeraldine D. Calangi. The winners were awarded with trophies, certificates, and cash prizes.
