TLRC bridges Math, English skills

The UP Visayas Teaching and Learning Resource Center conducted its annual Bridge Program in Mathematics and English to incoming first year students, aiming to bridge the gap between Senior High School level exit skills and college level entry-level skills in the said subjects.

The program commenced with an Orientation Program held on August 10, 2022, which informed the students of the importance of readiness to face the challenges of college education with the current remote learning mode of the university and the recent shift to a blended learning mode of instruction in mind.

“This is a preview experience of the remote learning education in UP so that at the start of the semester, you are all acclimatized to UP culture and UP environment,” said TLRC Director Prof. Lindley Kent Faina during the Orientation Program.

The three-week Bridge Program started on August 10 and ended on August 25, 2022, with a roster of faculty members from the Division of Physical Sciences and Mathematics, Division of Humanities, and UP High School in Iloilo guiding the students through the program as faculty tutors.

The faculty tutors introduced during the orientation were Prof. Maryene Sy Piecco, Prof. Marierose Chavez, Prof. Raquel Cajayon, Mr. Vincent Miclat, and Ms. Fretzy Jane Bares from the DPSM; Mr. Prabhat Ranjan Ubas, Mr. Eric Abalajon, and Ms. Jillian Loise Melchor from the Division of Humanities; and Mr. Rey Alexander Palmares from UP High School in Iloilo.

One of the participants from the Bachelor of Arts (History) program was invited to talk about her expectations as an incoming student of UP Visayas.

“I am looking forward to learning and growing here in UPV,” said Ma. Victoria Jimenea, after quoting Nelson Mandela’s words, “It always seems impossible until it’s done,” describing her journey as the first batch of Senior High School students to enter SHS in a remote learning setup.

Apart from Ms. Jimenea, 87 other students who qualified for different programs in the university identified by the Admissions Office of the UP System as “bridgers” completed the bridge program and continued on their journey as Iskolars ng Bayan.
