ProfEd Faculty and Alumni participate in 11th International Conference on Teacher Education

Faculty and students from the Division of Professional Education joined the 11th International Conference on Teacher Education (ICTED) held on November 13-15, 2024, at the Iloilo Convention Center. Organized by the University of the Philippines Diliman, the conference revolved around the theme “Preparing Teachers for Education 5.0 towards Sustainable Futures: Thrust, Challenge, and Praxis.”

The event featured renowned speakers such as Dr. John Creswell, an expert in research design, and Finnish education innovator Pasi Sahlberg. Participants explored frameworks and pedagogies designed to prepare teachers for a future-oriented, technology-driven, and sustainable education landscape.

Professors and alumni from the Professional Education Division shared notable research. Assistant Professor Helen Q. Fernandez, along with her co-authors, presented a study titled “Emotional Competence and Emotional States of High School Students: Bases for a Revitalized Homeroom Guidance Program Primary,” emphasizing its implications for homeroom guidance programs.

“The session was filled with active and participative audience. All the papers presented were timely and relevant, and it was a humbling experience being asked about the studies we had. It was a great experience being given the opportunity to share knowledge, particularly about mental health, among diverse participants,” Fernandez shared.

Assistant Professor Joven S. Llabore explored artificial intelligence in education through his study “Exploring AI Tools in Language Teaching: A Single-case Study of Language Teacher’s Experience.” He expressed enthusiasm for the insights gained. He stated: “Using AI tools in language teaching genuinely excites me. I thoroughly enjoyed presenting my work and receiving valuable feedback from an audience of fellow researchers. Their insights allowed me to uncover angles I had previously overlooked, providing a fresh perspective from individuals who share my experiences and sentiments as a language teacher.”

Ms. Genevieve Serilo Huesca, a graduate of MEd Social Studies and now pursuing her PhD in Education in Diliman, shared her research titled “Aspirations Over Adversities: Case Studies on Learners Raised by Single Mothers”, noting the dual challenges and rewards of addressing Education 5.0’s demands. She shared: “as my first experience in presenting a research paper in ICTED, it was both rewarding and challenging. It was rewarding to share what I have worked for, the fruits of my labor and a contribution to the body of knowledge to the participants all over the country. On the other hand, it was also challenging as the education 5.0 posed "another next " level of learning addressing the current needs of the society while keeping abreast with the trends in education.”

Meanwhile, Mr. Stephen Jhon Arellano, an MEd Mathematics graduate, presented his paper titled Factors Influencing Teachers' Intention to use Game-Based Learning in Secondary Mathematics, describing the experience as “fun and unforgettable” and emphasizing the value of insights gained from expert feedback. He shared: “I had the chance to present my paper to experts from various regions. Additionally, I gained a lot of valuable insights from the different speakers, which will be beneficial for my future studies and allow me to share new ideas with other people.”

The three-day event fostered collaboration among educators, researchers, and policymakers, addressing key issues in mental health, technological innovation, and inclusive education. Participants left inspired and equipped to implement sustainable educational practices in their institutions, marking ICTED 2024 as a significant milestone in advancing Education 5.0.
