Senior high school (SHS) students of the Pontevedra National High School in Pontevedra, Province of Capiz had their work immersion program at UP Visayas (UPV) Miagao campus.
Fourteen (14) Grade 12 students taking the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) strand completed their immersion activity at the Institute of Marine Fisheries and Oceanology (IMFO), College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences (CFOS), UPV on January 17, 2020.
IMFO director Prof. Nathaniel Añasco told the students to make use of their experiences and learnings in the Institute in choosing their future careers during the closing ceremony.
“When you go back to Pontevedra, look at the sea around you and remember IMFO,” Añasco said. “In choosing a career, still look at the sea. Remember, the ocean is our future. I hope to see some of you in the future.”
IMFO gave a real workplace experience to the senior high school students to prepare them in their future goals and careers after graduation. The students were provided lectures and hands-on laboratory training by the faculty members, REPS, and staff of the Institute.
The immersion activity started on January 7, 2020. The students learned about fish stock assessment, fish curation, planktology, marine ecosystems and ecotoxicology, and histology.
Mr. Francis Rendon of Pontevedra National High School expressed his gratitude to IMFO for giving their students and school the opportunity to immerse and learn from a prestigious institution like UPV.
IMFO has been accommodating senior high school students for their work immersion activity.
The work immersion program is a course requirement for graduation of the senior high school students under the K to12 Basic Education Curriculum to prepare the students to meet the needs and challenges of employment or higher education after graduation.
