The fourth-year BS in Management students of the University of the Philippines Visayas College of Management held the Strategic Management Summit 2024 with the theme, “Bata, Bata, Ika’y May Magagawa: Empowering the Role of the Youth in Disaster Risk Reduction and Management,” on November 27 at the UP Visayas Auditorium, Iloilo City campus.
The event was organized to raise awareness and appreciation among the youth about the Philippine Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Act of 2010 (RA 10121) as part of their MGT 190 - Strategic Management course.
The Strategic Management Summit 2024 was attended by students, faculty, and community members from Iloilo City.
The resource persons included Ms. Melissa Banias, Civil Defense Officer IV at the Office of Civil Defense VI; Ms. Ritchel Gavan, Special Operations Officer at the Iloilo City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office; Dr. Alfredo Mahar Francisco A. Lagmay, Executive Director of the UP Resilience Institute; and Prof. Jessica Dator-Bercilla, Science Resilience Fellow at the National Resilience Council.
The resource persons discussed topics including Understanding Disaster Risks – Basic Insights on RA 10121, Rising to the Challenge: Youth Leadership in Building Strategic Disaster Preparedness Plans Against Calamities, Hands and Hearts Ready: Encouraging Youth Involvement and Appreciation in Disaster Response and Recovery Efforts, and Advocacy and Action: Empowering Youth through Community-Based Disaster Preparedness Strategies and Resilience Initiatives.
Prof. Christopher B. Honorario, Dean of the College of Management, and Prof. Ruben Magan Gamala, faculty member of the College of Management, delivered the opening and closing remarks, respectively.
