Victorious on the board: UPV Chess Team Wins 14 Medals at RSCUAA 2024

The University of the Philippines Chess Team achieved a remarkable win at the RSCUAA 2024 held at the host school, Iloilo State University of Fisheries Science and Technology (ISUFST).

Over three intense days, each consisting of 4 games, lasting up to 2 hours per game, the UPV Chess team emerged victorious from fierce competition over 11 schools in both the men's and women's divisions, earning a total of 14 medals.

The team showcased immense talent over the board, combining strategies and tactics, surpassing the time pressure that came along with the game. The exceptional performance led to a historic win as it is the first of the teams of both categories, having placed in the top 3 in the RSCUAA chess competition. The women's team secured 5 silver medals for being the 1st-Runner-Up with members including Cherisse Hope Y. Gomez, Claire Angelique T. Ojerio, Apple Kaye P. Ibabao, Ma. Christina Kane B. Vito and Marcianne Elise C. Sirilan. The men's team also did not fall short as they secured 5 bronze medals, placing 2nd-Runner-Up with members Javan Christ F. Pagunsan, Wilson Lloyd C. Buco, Andry Joseph B. Tumacole, TJ Nathan D. Santillan, and Icent Ve S. Elisan.

Among the players, Andry Joseph B. Tumacole and Ma. Christina Kane B. Vito, representing board 3 and board 4, respectively, for the individual men's and women's board categories, earned the bronze medal for securing the 2nd-Runner-Up, adding up to the team's earned medals.

TJ Nathan D. Santillan, representing Board 4, took home a Gold medal for being the individual men's board category champion, earning him a spot to battle for the playoffs alongside the champion of Board 3, the silver medalist of Board 2, and the bronze medalist of Board 1. His opportunity to compete in the playoff highlighted his skills despite it being his first time appearing at the competition.

Cherisse Hope Y. Gomez, representing Board 1, also showed a standout performance. She won the Silver medal as the 1st-Runner-Up in the individual board women category, qualifying her to represent the region for the upcoming NSCUAA competition. Her win demonstrates expertise, as it is not the first time she has advanced to the nationals; she competed in the NSCUAA 2023 held at Tarlac State University earlier this year.

The overall success of the team was made possible with the rigorous training and expert guidance of their coaches under the supervision of Ma'am Rhoma Grace V. Pandan and Sir Mark Mariano, who also dedicated their time and effort, reflected by the team's performance. The said performance is a proud moment for the school and the team, setting a name of excellence as forces to be reckoned with in the game of chess.
