After a series of productive and engaging activities, the UPV Sibika Hub ended its year-long advocacy for this school year 2022-2023 with a public service workshop last May 27, 2023, at the GCEB Training room where the student leaders coming from the U.P. High School in Iloilo (UPHSI) and six DepEd schools namely; Iloilo City National High School (ICNHS), Jalandoni Memorial National High School (JMNHS), Jaro National High School (JNHS), La Paz National High School (LPNHS), Mandurriao National High School (MNHS), and Ramon Avanceña National High School (RANHS) took part.
This discourse aims for the participants mentioned above to have social interaction that would engage them in the notion of volunteerism through a string of workshop prepared by Prof. Donne Jone P. Sodusta, who is a member of the UPV-Sibika Hub Committee and the resource speaker. He highlighted the importance of the youth leaders in citizenship and civic engagement through his talk “(Re)imaging Youth-Driven Service Learning: Identifying our Resources and Filling in the Gaps” which focuses on service- learning”. The activity ended with an active invitation to network and collaborate beyond their respective schools on ideating and proposing future collaborative service-learning initiatives.
This one afternoon activity began with an activity that clarified the participants’ views as to why young people like themselves engage in community service activities. They were then invited to draw upon their knowledge and experiences in listing and classifying the various service-learning activities they have engaged in or have been made aware of. After a series of four cumulative workshop activities, they were able to approximate the type of initiatives in their respective communities, and as well as the types and levels of service-learning projects that remain to be started and implemented as potential local gaps. The actual service-learning project proposal development phase is slated as one of the activities of the next leg of SibikaHub along with the training of their teacher mentors on how to mentor these young student leaders to become active contributors to the civic life of their respective communities.
Mr. Candido M. Golez lll, Project Development Officer and Youth Formation from the Division of Iloilo City along with several Supreme Student Government (SSG) advisers of the partaker schools, were also present in the initiative.
UPV Sibika-Hub committees would like to extend their gratitude to the sponsors and the entrants for making this undertaking a success and meaningful.
