UPV, San Joaquin School of Fisheries renew MOA on work immersion partnership

UP Visayas (UPV) and San Joaquin School of Fisheries (SJSOF), a public high school in San Joaquin, Iloilo, renewed their engagement through the signing of a memorandum of agreement (MOA) on work immersion of senior high school learners.

UPV Chancellor Clement C. Camposano and SJSOF Head Teacher III and SHS Coordinator Ms. Mary Jean S. Santacera inked the MOA in a ceremonial signing held at Villadolid Hall, College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences, UPV, Miagao on February 15, 2023 to reaffirm their commitment to better equip the senior high school learners with the necessary knowledge and skills for employment and further education after graduation. The Institute of Fish Processing Technology, College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences (CFOS-IFPT) is the implementing unit in this agreement.

The MOA signing was witnessed by CFOS dean Prof. Encarnacion Emilia S. Yap and IFPT Director Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sharon N. Nuñal.

Camposano said the renewal of the partnership signifies UPV’s commitment under his administration to deepen engagements with more institutions and various communities.

The Chancellor said that UP is here for other schools to develop training programs to support and enhance the K-12 curriculum.

In 2019, the first batch of Grade 12 senior high school students had their work immersion with the IFPT.

Santacera expressed their gratitude to UPV for allowing their students to have their work immersion in the University particularly at CFOS.

“Our students gain more knowledge and skills when they were here at UPV.  Thank you so much,” she said.

Work immersion is a required subject in the senior high school curriculum for students to apply their competencies and acquired knowledge relevant to their track through hands-on experience or work simulation.

The second batch of 15 students will begin their work immersion on February 20.

Nuñal said the students will learn from special lectures on Microbiology, Chemistry, fish Handling, fish processing technologies, and concepts of food safety and good manufacturing processes. Among the hands-on training that the students will undergo are handling and preparation of fish, product development, packaging and labelling, storage as well as chemical and microbiological analyses.

“We hope that at the end of the immersion, the students will have holistic knowledge and skills on fish processing that can meet the expected learning output,” Nuñal said.

The agreement is valid for Academic Year 2022-2023 and is renewable every year.
