To further strengthen their knowledge and skills in Disaster Risk Reduction and Management, three personnel of the University of the Philippines Visayas (UPV), who are also members of the University’s Crisis Management Committee, attended the Basic Emergency Response Simulation Training at UP Manila held from May 8-9, 2024.
The team was composed of Mr. Aljohn Torreta, PDA for Crisis Management; Mr. Jefferson Castor of the Security Service Force; and Nurse Michael Gerald Jalandoni of the Health Services Unit.
The topics discussed were the following: (1) Introduction to Disaster Management, (2) Communication during Emergencies, (3) Collaboration during Emergencies, (4) Application of Command System during Emergencies, and (5) Integration of Communication, Collaboration, and Application of Command System During Emergencies.
Aside from theoretical learning, various simulation exercises were also conducted for the application of the learning and skills demonstration.
Mr. Castor was one of the few fortunate participants who were able to use the EMERGO Train System (ETS) during the simulation exercise. ETS is an analog tabletop simulation system used for education and training in emergency and disaster management.
The training was organized by the Healthy University Office, The Health Sciences Center, and was part of the Disaster Risk Reduction and Management for Health Program of UP Manila.
Other participants came from UP Diliman, UP Resilience Institute, Batangas State University, and Corazon Locsin Montelibano Memorial Regional Hospital, among others.
After the training, the participants are expected to echo their learnings among the members of the CMC and explore the possibility of conducting the said training in the university.
The CMC is grateful to Dr. Carlos Primero D. Gundran, the Chairperson of the TWG for Disaster Risk Reduction and Management, Health and Safety Committee at UP Manila for inviting UPV to the said training, as well as to the All UP Academic Employees Union through Ms. Shirley Golez for facilitating the participation of the concerned personnel.
Just last week, the members of the CMC also participated in a training-workshop on Crisis Management as part of their capacity development.
