Two groups of student researchers from UP High School in Iloilo’s Grade 12 HUMSS will be presenting their papers at the 7th International Conference on Philippine and Asian Studies at the 456 Hotel Le Grande in Baguio City from May 29 to June 1, 2024. The conference is organized by the Dalubhasaan ng mga Umuusbong na Mag-aaral ng Araling Filipino (DANUM) of the College of Liberal Arts of De La Salle University.
The titles of their papers are: “Norms Create Deviants: Foucauldian Discourse Analysis on Role Play World’s ‘GrandBall’ in Facebook” by Ms. Aubrey Kryzelle Combong, Ms. Ishi Novielle Digdigan, Ms. Janella Marie Delos Santos, Ms. Luzalie Ann Gonzales, and Mr. Glen Paul Canto; and “Unpacking the Narratives of Ten Bornean Datus’ Sculptures in Malandog: Concept of Racial Origin of Visayans” by Ms. Kyla Apostol, Ms. Zion Angela Linas, Ms. Mercy Alliah Armonidad, Ms. Elisha Denise Coloso, and Ms. Henarhy Jane Virayo.
Similarly, one group who opted to present their paper online will also be participating with their paper, “Paiba-Ibang Sisa: The Different Portrayals of the Madwoman Character Sisa in Declamation Performances,” by Ms. Monique Angela Panique, Ms. Abigail Grace Dicar, Ms. Vea Mae Esumadia, Ms. Faye Elizabeth Galino, and Ms. Lianna Louise Ngitngit.
Their papers are generated from the researches conducted under the Integrated Research Apprenticeship (IREAP) program of UPHSI, with the guidance of their research adviser, Dr. John E. Barrios, and research panel composed of Dr. Donne Jone Sodusta, Dr. Randy M. Madrid, Dr. Sanley Abila, and Prof. Ronela P. Jundos.
The participation of student researchers in the said conference is supported by the UPHSI Parents Teachers Association (PTA) and Justice Francis H. Jardeleza. The Francis-Chit Jardeleza Foundation turned over 60,000 PhP to the students in the presence of Prof. Edelia Braga, Principal; Prof. Anelyn Yabillo, Assistant to the Principal; and Dr. John Barrios, research professor.
Meanwhile, Grade 12 STEM students composed of Precious Sophia Bayoneta, Contessa Marie Ko, Rysa Anne Tabuada, and Earianne Jayne Ogatis received financial support from the Francis-Chit Jardeleza Foundation as well in the amount of 60,000 PhP to compete in the 13th Regional Congress Search for SEAMEO Young Scientists (SSYS) from June 10-14, 2024 in Penang, Malaysia. This year’s theme is “Youth for One Health through STEM Innovation.”
Their research paper is titled “Characterization of Corn Flakes Incorporated with Moringa (Moringa oleifera) and Jamaican Cherry (Muntingia calabura).” The students will be accompanied by their subject teacher, Dr. Jonny Pornel, and the UPHSI principal.
