UPV PE professor wins medal in Karate International Virtual “Kata” E-Tournament

Prof. Fernando S. Tinagan, a faculty member of the Physical Education Department, College of Arts and Sciences, wins “Silver Medal” during the recently concluded 2021 LUZVIMIN Friendship Games International Virtual “Kata” E-Tournament. The competition was participated in by the different Karate-do clubs in Luzon, Visayas, Mindanao, and other countries. Prof. Tinagan voluntarily joined and competed in the Master’s Category (50 years old and above) going up against various Karate Instructors and Masters as participants

Kata in Karate literally means “form” of Japanese work patterns of movements. “Kata,” on the other hand, is executed as a specified series or a variety of moves, with stepping and turning, while attempting to maintain perfect form. Its primary purpose is to develop a fighting spirit and fighting rhythms. It simulates an actual fighting situation because it allows the practitioner to feel and experience the coordinated movements at full speed and full power without having to “pull’ the technique to avoid injuring one’s training partner (Rother 2010).

The said event is sponsored by the Progressive Arts and Sports Karate-do, Philippines, headed by its founder and President Sensei Joel M. Madrona.
