UPV organizes Coaching and Mentoring Workshop for faculty administrators

The Office of the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs (OVCAA), in collaboration with the Human Resource Development Office (HRDO) of UP Visayas (UPV), organized a three-day Coaching and Mentoring Workshop for faculty administrators last 28-30 November, 2023 at Hotel Del Rio, Iloilo City. 

The workshop was designed to empower faculty administrators to be better coaches and mentors by upscaling their communication skills through a deeper understanding of adaptive leadership, the dynamics of a healthy dialogue, and resilient leadership, among others. 

In his welcome message, Chancellor Clement Camposano emphasized the importance of constantly learning as leaders so that faculty administrators can continue to inspire and unite the people they work with. 

The workshop proper began with a talk from HRDO Chief Ella O. Tidon on the roles and functions of faculty administrators. Afterward, Dr. Philip Ian Padilla, Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, discussed Systems Thinking in Higher Education, which helped the participants process their individual motivations and eventually identify their purpose in life. 

Ms. Czarinnah Araneta, one of the resource speakers of the workshop, discussed the tenets of current and preferred realities and the basics of coaching and mentoring. Her discussion included the different levels of listening and how to ask powerful questions to help coaches optimize their time with their coachees. 

Dr. Padilla and Asst. Prof. Josephine Firmase, on the other hand, collaborated to introduce adaptive leadership. Asst. Prof. Alexander Porras partnered with Firmase in demonstrating the practice of coaching and mentoring. Meanwhile, Dr. Helena Marie Lagon Alvior ended the three-day workshop with talks on the six thinking hats and resilient leadership. 

The faculty administrators participated in rigorous exercises that required everyone to demonstrate actual dialogues, identify problems, and foresee possibilities for their respective units or colleges.
