UPV marks NSTW 2023 with paper presentations from faculty, booths at exhibits

Paper presentations by faculty members and booths at the exhibits mark the University of the Philippines Visayas’ (UPV) participation at the National Science, Technology, and Innovation Week (NSTW) 2023 on Nov. 22-26 in Iloilo City, organized by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST).

Dr. Victor Marco Emmanuel Ferriols, a faculty member of the College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences (CFOS) and Director of the UPV Regional Research Center, delivered a presentation on “Developing Sustainable Aquaculture Strategies for the Blood Cockle (Tegillarca granosa) in the Philippines” on the second day of the NSTW 2023.

Earlier that day, Ferriols, who also heads the Philippine Genome Center Visayas, delivered his talk on the “Establishment of Genomics Consortium and Core Facility in Visayas” in one of the scientific sessions.

Also speaking at the sessions were Dr. Rex Ferdinand Traifalgar, CFOS faculty member and Director of the Institute of Aquaculture, and Dr. Christopher Marlowe Caipang, Dr. Wilfredo Campos, and Dr. Eric Zeus Rizo, faculty members of the Division of Biological Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences.

Caipang talked about the “Biofloc based Nursery Tank Production of Shrimp for Quality and Sustainable Supply of Aquaculture Products in the New Normal,” while Traifalgar discussed “Natural Growth Promoting Feed Supplements for Sustainable Aquaculture.”

Campos, on the other hand, presented “The Biology of Sardines and its Relevance to Managing their Fisheries,” while Rizo discussed “The Changing Landscape of Science Careers.”

UPV also participated in the Science and Technology exhibits at the Iloilo Convention Center, the venue of the main exhibit, and at the M/V Capt. John B. Lacson Training Ship, Muelle Loney Street.

The featured booths are from CFOS and the Coastline 5023 UPV Fisheries Technology and Business Incubator’s startup grantees Alcagon Aquafeeds Manufacturing and IF Green Technologies, under the DOST - Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development (PCAAARD).

Visitors of the booths at the main exhibit engaged with experts and scientists to learn more of their work and explore the future of science. The booths found at the M/V Capt. John B. Lacson Training Ship highlight marine biodiversity conservation efforts and the latest marine technology.

UPV also partnered with DOST-6 for the NSTW TechnoTours wherein the University showcased various research, development, and innovation facilities of the UPV RRC at the Miagao campus.

The NSTW 2023 was the first time the event was held outside Metro Manila, a press release from the organizers said. (With sources from OVCRE)
