UPV launches “Sibika Hub” for Western Visayas

UP Visayas (UPV) launched its Sibika Hub last Feb.18, 2023 at 1:00 in the afternoon at the Little Theater as part of the University’s Civic Education Program.

Consistent with its mandate to promote and enhance sustainable development and improve human well-being in the Philippines, UPV created a Civic Education program  that intends to provide the youth with a better understanding and appreciation of their important roles and responsibilities in a democratic society that is faced with pressing politico-economic, cultural and socio-environmental challenges and opportunities.

One of the projects of the Civic Education program is the creation of a Sibika Hub in partnership with the Youth Leadership for Democracy (YouthLed) program of The Asia Foundation and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). Sibika Hub serves as a centralized resource, network, and community hub on civic education and engagement that is accessible to the community. It is geared towards positive youth development by enabling access to quality resources on civic education. These resources are digestible, contextualized, and inclusive for all sectors of the youth.

YouthLed is a five-year program that aims to increase civic engagement to strengthen youth participation in democratic governance.

The event was attended by student government officers and advisers from various secondary high schools in the Division of Iloilo City, including Jaro National High School, La Paz National High School, Mandurriao National High School, Jalandoni National High School, Iloilo City National High School, and the Student Council and Goldies offices of UPV, and some of the NSTP students from UPV Miag-ao.

Prof. Pepito Fernandez Jr., Chairperson of the Division of Professional Education and also the chairperson of Civic Education Program,  welcomed the guests and participants to the said event.

Dr. Clement C. Camposano, UPV Chancellor, talked about Civic Education: How democracy works even in the Philippines. He highlighted the role of Civic Education and citizenship in a democratic society like the Philippines.  Mr. Rene Trance, a faculty member of UP High School in Iloilo, discussed the cultural heritage and its importance to our cultural identity.

The UPHSI Student Council and Goldies officers organized the said event with their adviser and Vice Chair of the Civic Education Program, Prof. Imelda Catequista, and Prof. Ronela S. Jundos, member of the Civic Education Program.
