The Humanities Division of the University of the Philippines Visayas (UPV), in collaboration with iWrite, will conduct a three-series event titled “Tingog Mo, Tingog Ko: A Capacity Building Workshop Series on Journalism” on October 24-25, November 7-8, and November 21-22, 2024.
According to Dr. Zoilo Andrada, Jr., project leader and the adviser of iWrite, the initiative is in response to the continuous harassment, red-tagging, and oppression among journalists in the Philippines. In this way, the project aims to foster collaboration and encourage the communities and citizens to be part of the advocacy of protecting campus and citizen journalists, especially during the election period.
The workshop series will cater mainly to students and teachers of public and private secondary schools in Miagao, Iloilo. Participating schools include Miagao National High School, San Jose National High School, Kirayan National High School, Bacolod National High School, San Rafael National High School, Alejandro Firmeza Memorial National High School, and St. Louise de Marillac School of Miagao.
There will be a two-day allotted time for each series, every Thursday and Friday, to be held at the Miagao Interactive Learning Center, UPV.
The workshop series theme will focus on the three “Es” of enhancing journalistic skills. The three “Es” will be enabling, engaging, and empowering student and teacher participants in addressing election-related issues in the community according to Dr. Andrada.
The Workshop Series 1 with the theme “Enabling Campus Journalists to Address Election-Related Issues in the Community” will be held on October 24-25, 2024. It will feature high-caliber speakers from the College of Mass Communication, UP Diliman. Asst. Prof. Karol Ilagan will lecture on the “Basics of Election Reporting” and “Using AI in Reporting Elections.” On the other hand, Prof. Yvonne Chua will talk about “Interpreting Polls and Detecting Spins” as well as “AI and Election Disinformation.” A hands-on activity on AI software will follow each lecture.
The highlight of the two-day workshop will be a collaborative workshop to craft a primer on the use of data and responsible AI in covering elections.
The second Workshop Series will be on November 7-8, 2024 with the theme “Engaging Campus Journalists to Address Election-Related Issues in the Community.” The main topic for this workshop will be on Media Accountability. Mr. Ariel Sebellino, Executive Director of the Philippine Press Institute will lecture on the “Rights and Responsibilities of Campus Journalists.” Mr. Francis Allan Angelo, Editor-in-Chief of the Daily Guardian, will talk on “Writing and Reporting Issues on Local Politics.”
A collaborative workshop will be conducted to craft a primer about the rights and responsibilities of campus journalists in citizen journalism and reporting election-related community issues.
Workshop Series 3 will be held on November 21-22 with the theme of “Empowering Campus Journalists to Address Election-Related Issues in the Community.” Speakers for this workshop are advocates in fighting fake news and disinformation and community-building experts from Rappler.
Topics to be discussed are “Identifying and Combating Fake News” and “Analysis of Election-Related News Stories.” The lectures will be followed by intensive writing workshops on identifying fake news and doing fact-checking.
A collaborative workshop on identifying and categorizing community problems or issues related to elections as well as classifying the rights, responsibilities, and roles of community journalists before, during, and after the elections. The session will then end by crafting a primer on identifying and combating fake news.
The "Tingog Mo, Tingog Ko: A Capacity Building Workshop Series on Journalism" will serve as a platform for students and teachers to engage in learning not only within the four walls of the classroom but also by venturing outside of their respective institutions to experience the true essence of the journalism profession. Likewise, the workshop series seek to promote and strengthen the freedom of expression and the safety of all campus and citizen journalists.
