Yel Pogoy, a freshman BS Chemical Engineering student at the University of the Philippines Visayas (UPV), clinched the championship title in the 28th Philippine Statistics Quiz (PSQ) - Iloilo Provincial Elimination, held at District 21 Hotel, Mandurriao, Iloilo City on October 25.
Competing against 46 contenders from 16 universities across Iloilo, Pogoy demonstrated exceptional statistical prowess to secure the top spot in the competition.
Joining Pogoy were Icent Ve S. Elisan from BS in Applied Mathematics I and James Castor from BS in Statistics I, with guidance from UPV Statistics faculty members Mr. Jaser John Dago-oc and Dr. Jhoanne Marsh C. Gatpatan.
Organized nationwide by the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), PSQ aims to enhance statistical literacy and foster a greater appreciation for statistics among the Filipino youth.
The provincial elimination round featured a rigorous, three-phase quiz assessing participants' knowledge of statistical concepts, theory, and applications. Spearheaded by PSA Iloilo, this annual event serves as an intensive selection process to identify the top three students who will advance to represent Iloilo at the regional level, with the goal of competing in the national finals.
As part of the National Statistics Month initiatives, this year’s PSQ embraces the theme “Advancing Data and Statistics through Digital Transformation: A Road to an Empowered Nation,” highlighting the critical role of statistical knowledge and data-driven decision-making in the digital age.
Following his victory, Pogoy is set to advance to the Regional Philippine Statistics Quiz on November 8, 2024, where he will represent Iloilo and compete with top students across Western Visayas.
