UPV-CFOS joins 11th IFS in Thailand

Faculty members, researchers, and students of the UP Visayas College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences (UPV-CFOS) joined the recently concluded 11th International Fisheries Symposium (IFS) held in Bangkok, Thailand.

CFOS dean Prof. Encarnacion Emilia S. Yap led the 16-member delegation from UP Visayas, 15 of which were from CFOS and one from the College of Arts and Sciences, to present papers at the IFS organized by the ASEAN Fisheries Education Network (ASEAN-FEN) on November 22-24, 2023. This year’s IFS was hosted by the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), Thailand.

 With the theme “Building Sustainable Fisheries and Aquaculture for Future Generations,” the symposium sought to promote collaboration, knowledge sharing, and innovation for sustainable aquaculture and fisheries.

Ten UPV participants presented their research findings during the Oral Presentation, while six others took part in the Poster Presentation.

Oral presenters were Yap, Asst. Prof. Dr. Iris Ann Borlongan, Asst. Prof. Dr. Sanny David Lumayno, Rose Mueda, Precious Nikola Gaurana, Ma. Novem Grace Ylayron, Allena Esther Arteta, Jhoanna Faye Jacinto, Leannah Andrea Toroy, and Asst. Prof. Mark Calabon.

Poster presenters included Asst. Prof. Leonilo Endoma Jr., Karie Mae Tolones, Raymund Parcon, Ferlyn Grace, Gaven Legarde, Patrick Andre Fernandez, and Ruby Napata.

Yap, Borlongan, and Lumayno were the session chairs for Fish processing, trade, and value addition; Aquatic animal nutrition and physiology; and Aquaculture biotechnology and engineering, respectively.

One of the conference's highlights was the designation of UP Visayas as the ASEAN-FEN's 10th Core Member, following a unanimous decision by the ASEAN-FEN Board and Core Members to elevate UPV's membership from associate to core status.

IFS is an annual academic symposium that gives attendees the opportunity to learn about a variety of topics through these technical sessions: (1) aquaculture biotechnology and engineering; (2) aquatic animal nutrition and physiology; (3) aquatic animal health management; (4) genetics and breeding; (5) Fisheries Resources, Fishing Technology, Policy, and Climate, biodiversity, and climate change; and (6 Fish processing, trade, and value addition.
