First year BS in Fisheries students had a glimpse of their student life at the College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences, UP Visayas (UPV-CFOS) as they were officially welcomed during the Opening Exercises on August 13, 2024 held at the AV Hall, CFOS, UPV Miagao campus.
CFOS dean Prof. Dr. Harold M. Monteclaro warmly greeted the new and continuing students to Academic Year 2024-2025.
“This is the day for us to know each other better. Let us enjoy this moment as a college,” Monteclaro said.
The new students were introduced to the four institutes, namely the Institute of Aquaculture (IA), Institute of Fish Processing Technology (IFPT), Institute of Marine Fisheries and Oceanology (IMFO), and Institute of Fisheries Policy and Development Studies (IFPDS) including the facilities, laboratories, faculty members, REPS, staff, and various student organizations at CFOS.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Liah C. Catedrilla walked the students down memory lane as she presented the history of CFOS, UPV’s flagship college, from its beginnings at UP Diliman to its transfer to the UPV Miagao, Iloilo campus in 1988.
Monteclaro outlined the current status of CFOS, highlighting its achievements as the center of excellence at the forefront of fisheries education in the country.
The dean encouraged the students to remember and exemplify CFOS’ vision, mission, and core values, which are the core of its operation and the foundation for its existence.
Fiona O. De Castro, a fourth year BSF student, shared her experiences and the many possibilities and opportunities associated with being in this program where learning happens not only in traditional classrooms and laboratories, but also in “classrooms with no walls, no borders, and no boundaries.”
“You have everything you need here in CFOS,” she remarked, telling the students to explore opportunities and realize their full potential. She also gave some tips for leading a successful and meaningful life during and after UP.
Sean M. Buenavista delivered a message on behalf of the first year students.
An orientation program and tour of the CFOS facilities and laboratories were conducted for the first year students to familiarize themselves with the academic and campus life at the College.
