UPHSI Team clinches 2023 DOST Young Innovators Grant

The UPHSI Team of UP High School in Iloilo composed of Abbie Jessica C. Leigh, Antoine Kaiser T. Demontano, Arwen Jayne B. Deriada, Aisha Yaelle F. Homeres, and Caiden L. Ramirez and their adviser Asst. Prof. Raphael V. Belleza secured a spot in the 2023 Young Innovators Award organized by the Department of Sciences and Technology-Philippine Council for Industry, Energy and Emerging Technology (DOST-PCIEERD).

Their research proposal "Cresunscreen: Formulation of the Calabash (Crescentia cujete) Methanolic Extract as a Sunscreen Cream" was one of the seven approved proposals for funding in the DOST PCIERD 2023 Young Innovators Program. The project aims to increase the SPF value of Calabash through phytochemical analysis, rotary evaporation, and freeze-drying until it reaches the ideal SPF value.

Parents and guardians of the students met with the high school principal, Prof. Edelia Braga, on August 10, 2023 to discuss the participation of their children in the program. A Memorandum of Agreement between UPV, DOST, and the parents will be signed to finalize this engagement.

The team will conduct the research study starting on the 3rd quarter of this year with a research grant from DOST PCIERRD. Assisting Advisers for the team include Asst. Prof. Pilar Mercedes A. Retiracion and Mr. Vicente M. Armones IV.

UPHSI is the only high school that qualified from the Visayas. Other high schools that qualified in the program around the country include:
