The University of the Philippines Visayas (UPV) achieved a major milestone as it was conferred its first-ever Platinum Award from the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL) during the 2025 Innovation and Technology Support Office (ITSO) Presidents' Summit held at Sequoia Hotel, Manila Bay last April 10, 2025.
The prestigious award recognizes UPV’s outstanding accomplishments in intellectual property (IP) and commercialization in 2024 which includes conducting 14 IP Foundation Courses; three (3) Patent Search Trainings; three (3) Patent Drafting Trainings; submitting 24 Search Reports; filing nine (9) Patent, eight (8) utility models, and five (5) trademarks; registering 13 copyrights; and commercializing one technology.
The Platinum distinction marks a significant leap for UPV, which previously held a Silver Award, reflecting the university's growing commitment to fostering innovation and technology transfer. The award was received by Dr. Reynold Tan, Director of UPV Technology Transfer and Business Development Office (TTBDO), together with Ms. Ferelyn Oliva, ITSO Manager and Intellectual Property Officer of UPV TTBDO.
The award was made possible by the strong collaboration between UPV researchers and TTBDO, backed by the unwavering support of the University. Special commendations were extended to the 2024 top patent filers: Prof. Fredson Huervana and Dr. Rex Ferdinand Traifalgar of CFOS-IA, and Dr. Christopher Marlowe Caipang of CAS-Division of Biological Sciences.
With this latest honor, UPV further reinforces its role as one of the leading academic institutions in innovation and intellectual property development.
