UP Visayas researcher Luke Dranoel D. Atencio excels at the 17th Asia-Pacific Biosafety Association (APBA) Annual Biorisk Conference

Luke Dranoel D. Atencio, University Researcher and Microbiologist at the Regional Research Center, University of the Philippines Visayas (UPV) excels at the 17th Asia-Pacific Biosafety Association (APBA) Annual Biorisk Conference. The conference, held alongside the BioRisk Association of the Philippines (BRAP) 7th Annual Convention and 5th International Forum from September 2 to 6, 2024, gathered global experts to discuss critical advancements in biosafety and biosecurity.

Atencio was the only representative from the entire Visayas region and one of only 9 participants chosen from the Philippines in a highly competitive pool of Medical Doctors, Veterinarians, Medical Technologists, Microbiologists, and Healthcare Professionals. He graduated as a fellow from the prestigious Health Security Partners (HSP) and Biosecurity Engagement Program (BEP) under the U.S. Department of State, an executive department of the U.S. federal government.

The yearlong fellowship is a competitive program aimed at advanced professionals with interests in life sciences, global public health, and security. The fellowship covers critical themes such as science diplomacy, sustainable development, food security, agroterrorism, infectious disease surveillance, antimicrobial resistance, international health security, dual-use research, bioterrorism, nonproliferation, and science policy. His successful completion of this program highlights his dedication to addressing global biosafety and biosecurity challenges.

In addition to his fellowship, Atencio passed the rigorous written examination to become a Certified Professional in Biorisk Management, accredited by the International Federation of Biosafety Associations (IFBA). This internationally recognized certification attests to his expertise in safely managing biological agents and materials, a vital aspect of reducing biosafety and biosecurity risks on a global scale.

IFBA’s certification sets the standard for professionals in biorisk management, affirming Atencio's proficiency and commitment to excellence in this critical field. His achievement reflects the increasing need for highly trained individuals capable of addressing the complexities of biosafety and biosecurity challenges in today’s interconnected world. With this certification, Atencio is now equipped to contribute significantly to the implementation of effective biorisk management strategies both locally and internationally.

Atencio was among the 7 winners of the International Category in the research poster presentation. His poster, titled ESKAPE Pathogens on Environmental Surfaces in Intensive Care Units from a Tertiary Healthcare Setting, stood out among 52 participants from 21 countries. His research contributes valuable insights into the prevention and control of antimicrobial resistance in healthcare settings, reinforcing the theme of the conference: Strengthening Global Partnerships for Biosafety and Biosecurity: Bridging Borders and Addressing Emerging Challenges. This achievement further highlights UP Visayas' leadership in advancing scientific knowledge and fostering global collaboration in biosafety and biosecurity.

Atencio's accomplishments at conference reflect his commitment to the global effort to address emerging health security challenges. His work also reinforces the importance of regional and international collaboration in protecting public health and security.
