UP breaks ground for new College of Law building in UPV, Iloilo City

Plans to establish several facilities in the University of the Philippines (UP) College of Law Extension Program in the University of the Philippines Visayas (UPV) Iloilo City campus will soon be realized as the construction of a law building and library will begin soon.

Officials from UP, UPV, and the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) held a groundbreaking ceremony last December 12,2024 at the UPV Iloilo City campus.

Department of Education Sec. Juan Edgardo “Sonny” Angara, former senator and UP law alumnus, graced the groundbreaking. Then Sen. Angara sponsored the funding of the law building, securing P 100,000,000 from the 2024 General Appropriations Act.

The law building will be named Angara Hall, in memory of Sen. Edgardo J. Angara, who was the 15th UP President and also a UP College of Law alumnus.

Associate Dean Andre Palacios, representing Dean Darlene Marie Berberabe, thanked UP Visayas for hosting the extension program in its campus in Iloilo City. In his message, Associate Dean Palacios expressed his vision to make the city a “center for excellence in law and legal education” with UP College of Law’s presence in the Visayas.

Construction is expected to start early in 2025 to be implemented by the DPWH and a contractor.

Additionally, UPV also designated a room in its Main Building for the extension program’s library, with the refurbishment having a proposed budget of P637,500.
