Ms. Analiza S. Galang-Linaugo, University Librarian of U.P. Visayas, was featured as one of the guest speakers in DZUP’s UP Atin To live broadcast last November 7, 2024 via DZUP 1602kHz, Facebook and YouTube. The insightful virtual discussion highlighted the essential roles of libraries as spaces for knowledge and how they respond to the needs of the tech-driven generation.
In celebration of the Library and Information Services Month and Philippine Book Development Month this November, the segment’s topic was about “Mga University Library, “In” pa rin ba sa mga estudyanteng techie?” Key points included library as a space; the importance of libraries in academic institutions; the rise of coffee shops and co-working spaces as learning spaces; impact of using gadgets for studying; and Artificial Intelligence (AI).
Ms. Linaugo contributed valuable insights during the session. She emphasized that libraries should be inclusive spaces where students are treated with respect regardless of social status, mores, religion, or gender. She also underscored libraries as reliable resources for students’ academic needs. On AI, she stressed that its use must come with discipline and limitations.
“The libraries are keeping pace with the new technologies. Many libraries in the Philippines have upgraded to meet the learning and research needs of the students. Despite the advancements, the practice of holding and reading a physical book must still be cherished, as it is where the journey of genuine love for reading began. Many book lovers have become successful individuals in various fields, and have led us to this modernized world. Books lovers could attest that there is nothing quite like the experience of turning the pages of a book and the smell of a paperback,” Linaugo concluded in her parting message.
