The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS), through Deputy Director Dr. Ma. Mylene Martinez-Villegas, turned over to the University of the Philippines Visayas (UPV) the two sourcebooks on earthquake and volcanic hazards that are written in the Hiligaynon language on February 4, 2025. The information materials are titled “Paglaragway sa mga Katalagman sang Linog” and “Sourcebook on the Descriptions of Kanlaon Volcanic Hazards in Hiligaynon and Cebuano.”
The sourcebooks that will benefit all sectors especially the academe, media, and local governments are part of the DANAS Project (Earthquake, Tsunami, and Volcano Disaster Narrative for an Experiential Knowledge-based Science Communication) of PHIVOLCS in collaboration with UPV and Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University (DMMMSU). The scientific materials contain information on earthquake and volcanic hazards and narratives of Hiligaynon and Cebuano-speaking survivors who experienced devastating ground shaking, tsunami, landslide, ashfall, lahar, and pyroclastic flow.
In the event held at the UPV Little Theater, Dr. Villegas stressed that the initiative combined science, communication, and local languages to disseminate scientific information that is easier to understand by the people. In the acceptance speech of Chancellor Camposano, he said that the sourcebooks support the advocacy of UPV to produce and disseminate scientific information written in local languages.
