Nominees for next UPV Chancellor present vision/mission papers

Chancellor Clement Camposano and former Vice Chancellor for Administration and Professor Mary Ann Gumban of the College of Management, the two nominees for the next Chancellor of the University of the Philippines Visayas (UPV), presented their respective vision/mission papers on August 7, 2023, at the Pidlaoan Hall, Miagao campus.

Camposano, who seeks a second term as UPV Chancellor, talked about building upon the milestones of UPV based on his five-point agenda, which includes:

1. Building on strengths in teaching, research, and public service

2. Deepen engagement with communities

3. Lead toward meaningful change in education

4. Deepen and promote diversity and inclusion inside UPV campuses

5. Reinvigorate democratic governance in the University

Among the milestones that he mentioned were the partnerships and collaborations with stakeholders, particularly with the various state universities and colleges (SUCs) and higher education institutions (HEIs) in the country; the upgrade of facilities, especially the Regional Research Center (RRC) and Philippine Genome Center (PGC); numerous knowledge dissemination activities; and initiative in the arts, among others.

Meanwhile, Gumban’s vision paper “looks into a future in which UP Visayas harnesses the power of technology to enhance education, foster global connectivity, promote lifelong learning, and redefine the traditional university experience.”

Her agenda and vision for the University for the next five years are as follows:

1. Regional University Network and Linkage Through Collaborative Research and Extension

2. In Focus: UPV and The Fisheries Sector Towards Food Security

3. Technological Innovation Towards Digitization and Digital Transformation for Enhanced Teaching and Learning Experience

4. Strengthen the Graduate School: New Curricular Programs and Extension Programs

5. Updating and Upgrading the Administrative Support Staff

6. Preserving Indigenous Culture and Heritage at the University

7. Establishing the Whole Wide World Alumni Network

Their vision/mission papers are posted on UPV’s website and social media platforms.

At the end of their presentations, the nominees answered questions from the attendees composed of UPV officials, faculty, staff, students, and alumni, including members of the Search Committee led by its chair, Dr. Rosalie Arcala-Hall.

The Search Committee will identify the nominee who is most suitable for the position, weighing in their credentials and extent of public support. However, it is the UP Board of Regents, the highest policy-making body of the UP System, that will appoint the Chancellor.

The questions from the attendees, physically and online, ranged from concerns about the UP High School in Iloilo (UPHSI), the transfer of the College of Management from the city campus to the Miagao campus, changes in the RRC, and calls of plantilla positions for contractual employees, among others.

On August 14, Monday, a public consultation is scheduled for members of the faculty at 10:00 AM, staff at 1:00 PM, and REPS at 3:00 PM at CM 11, Iloilo City Campus. Members of the faculty, staff, and REPS based in the Miagao campus will have their consultation at MILC at 10:00 AM, 1:00 PM, and 3:00 PM respectively.

A public consultation by appointment is scheduled on August 17, Thursday. The candidates will be available face-to-face at 10:00 AM at the New Admin Conference Room. They will also be available via Zoom starting at 1:00 PM.

The candidates will meet students at the CFOS Conference Room, Miagao campus at 1:00 PM on August 22, Tuesday. Members of the community will be accommodated at 3:00 PM. Meanwhile, students at the Iloilo City Campus will be given the opportunity to dialogue with the nominees on August 23, Wednesday at the GCEB Training Room 1. The nominees are set to meet the students at 1:00 PM and members of the community at 3:00 PM.

On August 28, Monday, the members of the Search Committee are scheduled to interview the nominees.
