Nominees for next UPV CAS Dean present vision statements and plans

Dr. Zoilo Andrada, Jr. and Prof. Pepito Fernandez, Jr., the two nominees for the next College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) Dean of the University of the Philippines Visayas (UPV), presented their respective vision statements and plans for CAS on Dec. 12, 2023 at the CFOS AV Hall.

Andrada, a faculty member of the Division of Humanities (HumDiv), envisions to prioritize service and academic excellence that instill values of integrity and critical thinking, moving towards a shared vision for global competitiveness.

His five-point agenda includes:

1) Strengthen teaching and learning capacity

2) Expand research and extension endeavors

3) Administrative support program

4) Student support services

5) Resource generation

Fernandez, a faculty member of the Division of Social Sciences and Chair of the Division of Professional Education, on the other hand, envisions a CAS that strengthens knowledge production and extension service to fulfill the vision and mandate of the UP System and UP Visayas, achieved through inclusive processes and active participation by various units and groups in CAS.

In addition, Fernandez's grand vision is to build a CAS that:

1) Strengthens knowledge production (i.e. teaching and research) and extension service

2) Nurtures students and personnel

3) Utilizes and shares its capabilities and resources to strengthen collaboration with partners to better serve the public

Andrada previously served as the Project Development Assist. for Mass Media and Communication under the Office of the Chancellor, the Chair of HumDiv, and the Director of the Teaching and Learning Resource Center. Meanwhile, Fernandez is a former Chair of the Division of Social Sciences.

Faculty members, students, academic support staff, administrative staff, and Research, Extension, and Professional Staff (REPS) of CAS listened to the presentations of the vision statements and plans of the two nominees, face-to-face and online via Zoom.

A series of consultations with the various sectors of the College is slated from Dec. 12-14, 2023 at the Miagao and Iloilo City campuses, to be conducted by the Committee for the Next CAS Dean, led by Dr. Reynold Tan of the College of Management.

The Committee conducted an active search process and identified qualified candidates for the position.
