MEd ESL II students conclude seminar series

The UP Visayas Master of Education English as a Second Language Second Year students concluded a two-day Seminar Series on "The Congruence of Supervision and Leadership: Keys to Effective Institutional Management” on  July 27, 2024. This was held at the Graduate and Continuing Education Building Training Rooms 1, 2, and 3 at the Iloilo City Campus.

The Seminar Series aimed to develop a comprehensive understanding of the tenets of educational management, leadership, and supervision; analyze existing frameworks for supervision; and highlight the value of supervision and leadership in different educational contexts.

Dr. Randy M. Madrid, Master of Education Program Coordinator, delivered the Opening Remarks. In his message, he welcomed the participants composed of pre-service and in-service teachers and education students from the public and private sectors, challenging them to hone their skills as teacher leaders, who will be at the forefront of national progress.

"What would the world be without intellect and content? Therefore, somebody has to lead. We have to lead."

Dr. Myrna B. Libutaque, the Assistant Chief of the Curriculum and Instruction Division for Student Affairs of the Philippine Science High School-Western Visayas Campus (PSHS-WVC), was the Guest Speaker.

She emphasized the concept of transformational leadership in delivering quality education, supporting the career advancement of the teaching staff, and raising teacher-leaders who contribute to their institutions and communities.

The MEd ESL II students lectured on the following topics:

  • Classroom Observation, Teacher Evaluation, and Supervisory Conference by Angelo Vincent T. Del Rosario of the PSHS-WVC;
  • Demonstration Teaching by Maria Adhara T. Pagdanganan of St. Paul University Iloilo;

As a Class Project in EDL 261 (Supervision of Bilingual Education) under the guidance and supervision of Prof. Ma. Joji B. Tan and Ms. Gerthrode Charlotte Tan-Mabilog, the Seminar Series was offered free of charge to 100 pre-registered participants.

Citing the importance of "knowledge-sharing and academic and research collaborations to foster trans- and multi-disciplinal institutional partnerships and synergies," Dr. Madrid assures that the Division of Professional Education will organize similar activities for other clusters such as Biology, Chemistry, Filipino, Guidance, Mathematics, and Social Studies in the future.
