Gigantes Island fisherfolk undergo entrepreneurship training

Thirty members of the Gigantes Island Federation of Fisherfolks Sector (GIFFS) Fishermen Cooperative attended the training titled "Training on Entrepreneurship: Sustainable Management of a Community-Based Enterprise for Seafood Products" held at Brgy. Granada, Carles, Iloilo last August 17, 2022. 

The participants were composed of one male and 29 females coming from the six fisherfolk associations, namely Invincible Women's Association of Granada (IWAG), Barangay Granada Fisherfolk Organization (BGFO), Asluman Fisherfolk Association Inc. (ASFAI), Barangay Asluman Women's Association (BAWA), Dap-Dap Women's Association (DAPWA) and Asosasyon sang Mananagat sa Gabi (AMAGAB) that were instituted and confederated into a cooperative by the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) Region VI. 

This one-day training aimed to capacitate the GIFFS Cooperative members who are engaged in the processing of value-added products from scallops and equip them with the fundamental skills and proper mindset on sustainably managing an enterprise and eventually improve their lives, hence, contributing to the inclusive growth in the community.

Mr. Julius Elmedorial, Senior Business Counselor of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Region VI, assigned in the 5th District of Iloilo, served as the resource speaker. His lecture focused on the basics of financial management, marketing, and product costing. 

The training was organized and facilitated by the Institute of Fish Processing Technology, College of the Fisheries and Ocean Sciences (IFPT-CFOS) through the University of the Philippines Visayas Foundation Inc. (UPVFI) in partnership with BFAR VI and the USAID Fish Right Program under the project titled "Refinement of Processing Technologies for Identified Commodities in FMA 11" led by Dr. Sharon N. Nuñal.
