Gender Research Colloquium sheds light on concerns of women

The University of the Philippines Visayas Gender and Development Program (UPV-GDP) and the Ugsad Regional Gender Resource Network Western Visayas held the Gender Research Colloquium to present the plight of women based on the research of academe members, at the Little Theater, UPV Iloilo City campus on March 29. 

The organizers invited academe researchers who are also gender advocates to discuss their respective research presentations. The colloquium is part of GDP and Ugsad’s ongoing series of activities for the 2023 National Women’s Month celebration. 

Those who spoke at the colloquium were Prof. Edelyn Gomez, gender and development (GAD) Coordinator of the West Visayas State University College of Arts and Sciences (WVSU-CAS); Prof. Augil Marie Robles of the UPV Division of Social Sciences; Dr. Emily Dela Cruz, GAD Center Director of the Iloilo Science and Technology University (ISAT U); and Prof. Edel Carmela Subong-Csoka, Director of the WVSU-International and Local Linkages Office. 

The studies discussed were “Lived Experiences of Breastfeeding Teenage Mothers;” “Exploring Lay Interpretations of Family Planning Through the Use of Social Representations Theory;” “Voices of Adolescent Children in Coping with the Stigma of Maternal Incarceration: A Narrative Inquiry;” and “Preys in Time of the Pandemic: Coverage of Violence on Women on Philippine Online Newspapers during COVID-19 Pandemic.”

Representatives of National Government Agencies in Western Visayas, the academe, and college students of the University attended the activity. Attendees asked more details about the topics and shared their experiences and concerns during the open forum portion of the colloquium.

According to the researchers, their studies were also presented to the academe, concerned government offices, and the media for information dissemination and potential interventions.
