A call for gender inclusivity resonated with over 130 faculty and staff members at West Visayas State University - Janiuay Campus as Assistant Professor Early Sol A. Gadong of UP High School in Iloilo (UPSHI) delivered a powerful talk on “Transcending Gender Binary in the Workplace” during the 11th Faculty and Staff Institute last July 31, 2024.
The event, centered on the theme "Faculty and Staff: Weaving Tomorrow’s Tapestry-Enriching Theory, Pedagogy, and Practices," focused on enhancing inclusivity and respect in educational and professional settings.
Gadong stressed the importance of understanding SOGIE-SC (sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, and sex characteristics) to foster an inclusive environment. “When we are required to conform strictly to the characteristics associated with our assumed gender, we lose access to a significant part of our human experience. This restriction not only limits our own behavior and potential but also hinders the growth, authenticity, and potential of others,” she stated.
The speaker highlighted that recognizing diverse identities is essential for creating supportive environments. “Understanding SOGIE-SC is crucial for fostering inclusivity and respect. It helps us recognize and affirm the diverse identities and experiences of individuals. By acknowledging this diversity, we can create more supportive and accepting environments in our workplaces, schools, and communities,” Gadong explained.
Gadong also pointed out the benefits of gender equality for men, particularly through Paternity Leave policies. “Gender equality also benefits men as it gave rise to Paternity Leave policies. This leave allows fathers to spend more time with their newborn babies, fostering stronger family bonds and sharing the responsibilities of childcare,” she noted.
To support gender inclusivity in the workplace, Gadong suggested several approaches: education, advocacy, allyship, and action. By providing the workforce with training on SOGIE-SC, organizations can foster a more respectful and understanding workplace. This education can challenge stereotypes, promote empathy, and equip employees with the tools to create a more inclusive culture.
Gadong’s talk on transcending gender binaries ignited a powerful conversation about inclusivity at WVSU-JC. By emphasizing the importance of understanding SOGIE-SC and promoting gender equality, Gadong challenged the audience to create a more supporting environment and accepting campus community.
The 11th Faculty and Staff Institute provided a valuable platform for discussing critical issues in education, such as Gender Inclusivity, Authentic Assessment, Online Etiquette, and Positive Workplace and Healthy Culture. As WVSU-JC moves forward, continuing to prioritize gender equality and diversity, alongside other essential areas of development, will be crucial for creating a thriving and equitable learning environment for all.
