Faculty members and staff from the different colleges in the University of the Philippines Visayas (UPV) attended a workshop on data visualization on 14 July 2022 at the New Administration Building, UPV Miagao. Dr. Johnny Snyder, a professor of computer information systems and business analytics at Colorado Mesa University in the United States, served as a resource speaker.
Snyder briefed the participants on Tableau, an interactive data visualization software. He underscored the importance of data visualization in the field of science and research, business, and other industries.
Participants gained hands-on knowledge on how to import data into the Tableau environment, create data visualizations, export visualizations in multiple formats, and use the basic analytical tools of the software.
According to Dr. Hanny John Mediodia, assistant to the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs for internationalization, the teaching and research staff of UPV need to possess data visualization skills so that teachers can prepare their students to engage in a data-driven world and researchers can better communicate their results.
The participants included Alan Moscoso, Ma. Carisse Compendio and John Salvador Ricacho from the School of Technology; Liza Joy Galanza, Pearl Gladys Diano, Kezzie Lyn Hilado, and Prof. Rhea Subong-Espina from the College of Management; Prof. Louie Marie Eluriaga and Prof. Elfred John Abacan from the College of Arts and Sciences; Engr. Rio Lemana from the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Planning and Development; and Roeyna May Famisaran and Lei Marie Tess Paulma from the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs.
