Dean Yap, Monteclaro represent UPV in China-ASEAN mariculture forum

In line with the efforts of UP Visayas to strengthen its internationalization, Dean Encarnacion Emilia S. Yap of the College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences (CFOS) attended the China-ASEAN Marine Aquaculture Industry Development Forum at Zhuahai, Guangdong, China on May 17-20, 2019.

Yap said that the “forum served as a venue for exchange of information between higher institutions in fisheries in ASEAN and China and to further some collaborative programs between these institutions.”

Prof. Harold M. Monteclaro, director of the Institute of Fisheries Policy and Development Studies (IFPDS), CFOS also participated and represented the University in the forum to promote cooperation in research between UPV and other universities and research institutions in China.

The attendance of Yap and Monteclaro to this activity was upon the invitation of the dean of School of Life Sciences, Sun Yat-sen University and chairman of the forum, He Jianguo.

Organized by China-ASEAN Center for Joint Research and Promotion of Marine Aquaculture Technology, the gathering tackled issues and concerns on the current state of the development of marine aquaculture industry in China and ASEAN countries.

Meanwhile, dean Yap travelled to Malaysia last March 26-28, 2019 to attend the ASEAN Fisheries Education Network (ASEAN FEN) related activities.

Yap represented UPV at the ASEAN FEN board and committee members’ meeting to discuss preparations of International Fisheries Symposium 2019 as well as in the ASEAN FEN constitution preparation workshop. These events were hosted by the University of Putra Malaysia, Serdang, Malaysia.

UPV, through the CFOS, is one of the associate institutional members of ASEAN FEN, a consortium of fisheries and aquaculture oriented institutions within the Southeast Asia region aimed at enhancing the fisheries and aquaculture sector through education, research, and public outreach in the region.
