CFOS offers training to non-teaching personnel

The College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences (CFOS), through the Committee on General Welfare and Administrative Matters, conducted a series of staff development training to its non-teaching personnel.

Taking into account the significant role and valuable contribution of the non-teaching staff in the successful implementation of various CFOS programs and goals, the Committee, headed by Asst. Prof. Dr. Farisal Ungkakay-Bagsit, formulated relevant staff development plans and training opportunities  to enhance employees’ knowledge and skills to become more productive and effective in the workplace.

The initiative also strives to align employees’ capacities and abilities with the advancements in technology, strategies, and other changes in the workplace.

Recently, administrative personnel from the different institutes and units of CFOS attended the Effective Office Communication Skills Training. Asst. Prof. Jude Vincent Parcon, chairperson and faculty member of the Division of Humanities, College of Arts and Sciences (CAS), UP Visayas (UPV), was invited as the resource person.

About 51 personnel attended the activity on August 2-3, 2023 at the audio visual room, CFOS, UPV Miagao campus. Parcon introduced effective communication in the workplace and ways to improve it. He also presented the essential rules of phone and email etiquette and the proper letter writing.

Meanwhile, 27 employees learned and enhanced their basic IT skills in database management and general computer literacy from Asst. Prof. Dr. Cherry P. Añasco conducted on June 29-30, 2023 at MILC, UPV Miagao campus.

Participants in the database management training were chosen from among those who manage and are responsible for the records of their respective offices, while those in the basic computer skills training were chosen from those who have never received any training or have limited knowledge in using the computers.

The staff development training is one of the plans and activities that the Committee identified during the CFOS strategic planning and workshop held last February 2023. The year-end review and strategic planning workshop is one of the regular activities of CFOS that look into the implementation of its plans and identify specific objectives, needs, and action in achieving its vision. The Committee is set to conduct more training in the upcoming months.

Members of the CFOS General Welfare Committee include Asst. Prof. Dr. Mary Grace Sedanza, Asst. Prof. Dr. Iris Ann Borlongan,  Asst. Prof. Karlo Primavera, Ma. Teresa Gabon,  Helen Monteclaro, Enrique Legaspi III, Ma. Carolina Torrecampo, and Mr. Noel Misola.
