CAS culminates week-long celebration with awards night and book launch

The UP Visayas College of Arts and Sciences culminated its CAS Week celebration with an Alumni Night, which highlighted the homecoming of its alumni after 20 years. The event also recognized the awardees for outstanding performance and launched the coffee table book titled “Reflections: The CAS Diamond Book,” edited by CAS Dean, Dr. Alice Joan G. Ferrer.

The awardees for Outstanding Performance for Administrative Personnel are Ruperto Quitag (SG 4-6), Gene Ann Camaymayan (SG 7-10), and Enrique N. Legaspi (SG 11 and above - Nonsupervisory). Prof. John E. Barrios of UP High School in Iloilo was given the same award in the Creative Works category.

In his speech on behalf of all the awardees, Quitag emphasized the value of hard work and the willingness to go beyond the call of duty, attributes that he honed over the years. Despite the challenges, he encouraged his fellow University personnel to stay focused on their responsibilities and work passionately.

Former Chair of the Division of Biological Sciences, CAS Dean, Vice Chancellor, Faculty Regent, Chancellor, and currently Professor Emeritus Dr. Minda J. Formacion was the guest speaker of the Alumni Night. She was introduced by Prof. Marie Frances Nievales, Chair of the Division of Biological Sciences. Formacion fondly recalled her journey in UPV during her speech, briefly sharing about how she worked her way up throughout her illustrious teaching career. Through her message, Formacion hopes to inspire more professors to continue to serve the University with dedication and diligence.

One of the highlights of the evening was the launching of the coffee table book, which intends to showcase the past 75 years of CAS and the many accomplishments of its alumni. The book is also a fund-raising project designed to finance some of the projects of the College. Through the generosity of the alumni, the book was brought to life. Donors were also recognized on stage and given their copies of “Reflections: The CAS Diamond Book.”

A plaque of recognition was given to individuals who are known as mobilizers of the CAS Diamond Fund Drive. They were recognized for their efforts to reach out to people to support the fund drive. There were several mobilizers, but a few stood out based on the amount of donations they were able to facilitate. Among the staff, Ma. Regina M. Montevirgen ranked first in terms of generation of donations. Overall, Dr. Ferrer ranked first, Prof. Ma. Edelia T. Braga ranked second, Dr. Arnel Tampos ranked third, Prof. Marie Frances Nievales ranked fourth, and Prof. Pepito Fernandez, Jr. ranked fifth.

Among the unit mobilizers the Division of Physical Sciences and Mathematics ranked first, the CAS Dean’s Office ranked second, and the Division of Biological Sciences ranked third.

Also present during the event were the former deans of CAS, including Dr. Ebonia Seraspe, Dr. Ma. Luisa Mabunay, Dr. Resurreccion Sadaba, and Prof. Ma. Severa Fe Katalbas.

The program was hosted by Mr. Andrei Tagapan and Mr. Alfred Abalos, both full-time instructors from the Department of Physical Education.
