Antique Teachers complete Training on Cultural Mapping administered by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) and the University of the Philippines Visayas (UPV)

Eighty-eight DepEd teachers from the twenty-two districts of the province of Antique have completed six sessions for the Cultural Mapping of the Province of Antique Project, including the final session on “Personalities and Institutions Domain” by Ms. Ricamela Palis of Artist PAR, Inc. This final training was held at Hotel Kinaray-a, San Jose de Buenavista, Antique, last March 06, 2021.

The training sessions started with a face-to-face session last February 06, 2021, at Saint Anthony’s College, San Jose de Buenavista, Antique, with a discussion on the core concepts of cultural mapping, namely, culture, cultural heritage, and guides to conducting participatory cultural mapping. 

From mid – February to March, the following training sessions were conducted:

  • Methods, Ethics, Fieldwork Protocols by Mr. Arvin Manuel Villalon – National Commission for Culture and the Arts 
  • Overview of Natural Heritage Domain by Mr. Arvin Manuel Villalon – National Commission for Culture and the Arts 
  • Overview of Tangible Immovable (Built) Heritage by Fr. Harold Ll. Rentoria, OSA – University of San Agustin
  • Introduction to Philippine Architecture by Ar. Wilfredo Sy Jr.
  • Overview of Intangible Heritage by Mr. Arvin Manuel Villalon – National Commission for Culture and the Arts
  • Overview of Tangible Movable Heritage by Ms. Cecille Gelicame – De La Salle Dasmarinas
  • Overview of Personalities and Institutions Domain by Ms. Ricamela Palis – Artist PAR, Inc.

Antique and UPV consultants for Culture presented the following topics:

  • Biodiversity of the Province of Antique by Dr. Rex Sadaba - University of the Philippines Visayas
  • Traditional Knowledge of Antique by Dr. Alicia Magos – University of the Philippines Visayas
  • Fieldwork Experiences by Mr. Samuel Rubido – Antique Consultant for Culture
  • Geological Background of Antique by Engr. Jonathan De Gracia - Antique Consultant for Culture
  • Photo and Video Documentation by Mr. Ramon Ramirez – University of the Philippines Visayas
  • Memoirs of a Guerilla by Mr. Jose Tondares – Antique Consultant for Culture
  • Archival Research: Local Church History in Antique by Fr. Cornelio Ysulat – Antique Consultant for Culture
  • Significant Personalities of Antique by Mr. Errol Santillan – Antique Consultant for Culture

After the six–week training, fieldwork activities for data gathering will commence, from which the activity will be assisted by the Municipal Tourism Officers of Antique. Furthermore, the UPV mentors and Antique consultants will be joining the group as they culturally map the mainland municipalities of Antique as well as its island territories. Mr. Jose Taton, Jr. and Dimple Rios are assigned to Southern Antique, while Mr. Sashah Dioso and Michelle Villavert will take charge of the Northern Antique municipalities. 

A compendium and report will be the output of this project which will be submitted to the Provincial Government and the Department of Education – Antique, which will be utilized as core references for DepEd modules on Culture and IP Education.

Joining the final joint face-to-face & Zoom session were SDS Felisa Beriong, Chief Historical Consultant for Antique; Dr. Alicia Magos, Project Consultant; Ms. Anna Razel Ramirez, Overall Project Coordinator, as well as the UPV mentors, Antique consultants, Antique Tourism officers, and the UPV administrative support staff.

The Cultural Mapping of Antique project is implemented by UPV in coordination with the Office of the Chancellor, Center for West Visayan Studies and the Information and Publications Office.
