Four students of the National Taiwan Ocean University (NTOU) are spending their summer internship at the Institute of Fish Processing Technology, College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences (CFOS-IFPT) this year.
CFOS-IFPT formally welcomed the exchange students in an opening ceremony held at the FC Conference Room, CFOS, UP Visayas Miagao campus on July 12, 2023.
CFOS dean Prof. Encarnacion Emilia S. Yap addressed and briefed the foreign students on what to expect during their two-month stay at UPV, specifically at the College.
NTOU is a national university of higher learning situated in Keelung City, Taiwan. Two undergraduate and two graduate students under Prof. Yu-Wei Chang, NTOU dean of international affairs, are undergoing their internship at CFOS-IFPT from July 10 to September 1, 2023.
In his message, Dr. Yu-Wei Chang, NTOU dean of International affairs, briefly narrated the history of the partnership between CFOS-IFPT and NTOU, citing the exchange of students working in the respective laboratories of the two institutions.
Chang expressed his sincere appreciation to IFPT for the wonderful experiences of their students. He hoped that the partnership will continue to thrive.
IFPT director Prof. Dr. Sharon N. Nuñal introduced the faculty members, REPS, and staff of the Institute that the Taiwanese students will work with.
Dr. Grace N. Palmos, IFPT university research associate and chair of the internship committee, presented the overview of the internship program. For the next two months, the interns will be exposed to various research projects and operations of different laboratories of the institute. They will also spend one (1) week with the Regional Research Center (RRC) as a new partner of the program. They will prepare and present their individual output at the end of the internship program.
The Taiwanese students will also have the opportunity to meet student interns from North Eastern Mindanao State University and Philippine Science High School – Western Visayas who are currently undergoing their immersion and on-the-job training with CFOS as well as the exchange students from Kagoshima University, Japan.
For a start, the student interns toured around the campus for familiarization, and started their cultural integration with a visit at the Miagao Tourism Office, the Indag-an Primary Multi-purpose cooperative to witness the local practice of weaving, and the UNESCO World Heritage site, the Sto. Tomas de Villanueva church.
NTOU and UPV-CFOS have been exchanging students since the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for research and academic exchange in 2017. The MOU was renewed for another five years last August 23, 2022. (With sources from IFPT)
