USWAG IKCP held its Culminating Program on August 9, 2023 at the University of the Philippines Visayas GCEB Training Rooms. Key cooperating agencies and participants who have made the project a fruitful one attended: the Iloilo City LGU through the Office of the City Agriculturist, the Department of Agriculture, school principals, representatives from the participating barangays, and WESVAARRDEC (Western Visayas Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development Consortium).
USWAG-IKCP was launched last February 16, 2022 and was funded by DOST-PCAARRD under its Gulayan sa Pamayanan project. It was implemented by the University of the Philippines Visayas with Prof. Ruben M. Gamala of the College of Management as Project Leader.
USWAG-IKCP promotes the utilization of idle and open urban spaces for backyard and community vegetable gardening to address food insecurity, malnutrition, and hunger to urban households brought about by the devastating effects of the Covid 19 pandemic. This project is timely and consistent with Iloilo City’s Regulation Ordinance No. 2022-215, An Ordinance Institutionalizing the Urban Agriculture Farming in the City of Iloilo and DILG’s MC No. 2023001, Implementation of the Halina’t Magtanim ng Prutas at Gulay (HAPAG) sa Barangay Project.
Nine barangays from Iloilo City (Quezon, Yulo Drive, Ticud, Calumpang-Calaparan, Zamora-Melliza, Lanit, Dungon A) and Brgy. Aguiauan of Miagao, Iloilo, participated and received starting gardening tools sets, high value vegetable seeds, trainings and workshops.
USWAG IKCP commences on August 15, 2023.
