The UP Visayas Technology Transfer and Business Development Office (UPV TTBDO), led by Dr. Reynold D. Tan, met with Dr. Leni Yap-Dejeto, Dr. Rolly Fuentes, and the mussel research team for the possible commercialization of products from the DOST-Funded Utilization and Extraction of Mussel Glycogen project last June 3, 2022, at UP Visayas Tacloban College, Tacloban City, Leyte.
The discussion centered on the technology commercialization of the mussel glycogen as it shows promising potential in the market. The project was able to formulate cosmetic products such as cream, ointment, and soap from food-grade glycogen extracts and a laboratory-grade glycogen for biotechnology purposes. The research team also plans to establish a spin-off company for the technology with the guidance of UPV TTBDO.
UPV TTBDO also facilitated the application for trademark protection of the mussel glycogen as the product banner of the spin-off company. The technology currently has three registered and two published Utility Model applications.
An investor forum will be held this coming August 2022 to jumpstart the technology commercialization process. The forum will be an opportunity for the team to pitch their technology to potential investors, users, and buyers. It will also be a good venue for addressing the needs of the industry and provide insights on areas that need further research.
