UPV tech Limontin Liquid Pectin awarded at DTI-6’s pitching competition

Limontin Liquid Pectin, a technology of the University of the Philippines Visayas, recently received the “Best Green Technology” special award at the Moonshot TNK Pitching Competition of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI)-6.

One of the products of the CP Innovations start-up, Limontin Liquid Pectin is a technology that extracts liquid pectin from calamansi waste peels for various applications, including thickening, texturizing, and cosmetics.

Dr. Concepcion Ponce of the Department of Chemistry, College of Arts and Sciences is the technology generator and founder together with Dr. Jihan Santanina Alumbro of the School of Technology (SoTech) and co-founder Ms. Christine Faith Germinal, University Research Associate of the Technology Transfer and Business Development Office (TTBDO).

Germinal delivered the pitch on behalf of CP Innovations during the competition held at the Diversion21 Hotel in Iloilo City, on Sept. 9.

Limontin Liquid Pectin is the start-up’s pioneer product and the first and only liquid pectin produced in the Philippines. It is a locally and sustainably produced food texturizer from fresh calamansi peels from Western Visayas producers of fruit concentrates, jams, and sauces.

CP Innovations is one of the two incubatees of FTBI that won awards at DTI-6’s pitching competition. Banwa Pens, a start-up that specializes in handcrafting pens out of local woods, won the “Best Non-Tech Award.”

The two incubatees are among the 10 startups out of 34 in Western Visayas to advance in the competition, a report from Daily Guardian said. Of the number, eight are from Iloilo, one is from Negros Occidental, and the other is from Guimaras.

The Moonshot TNK Pitching Competition’s primary goal is to bolster local startups and enable them to advance their technological and creative solutions to address critical challenges in Western Visayas, particularly in the fields of health, poverty, education, and the environment.
